Two people were feared killed in Ikire, Osun State, on Monday following an alleged attempt by rival political groups to take control of a motor park at Naira and Kobo Junction.
According to reports, the violence began around 10:30 a.m. when some drivers allegedly linked to the Accord Party attempted to take over the park from drivers reportedly loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Videos and photographs from the scene appeared to show two people lying in pools of blood, with one man reportedly found inside a vehicle with a serious head wound.
An eyewitness said the confrontation also led to the destruction of a new Toyota Hilux vehicle donated to the Ikire Divisional Police Station. The vehicle's windscreen was reportedly smashed and its tyres damaged.
Another resident claimed that an Accord Party member was shot during the clash. Following the incident, some Accord members reportedly went to the palace of the Akire of Ikire to complain that the Divisional Police Officer was involved in the violence.
However, police reportedly gave a different account, alleging that members of the Accord Party had abducted the Secretary of the Palm Oil Sellers Association in Ikire. According to the police account, officers were pursuing the alleged abductors when an exchange of gunfire occurred, resulting in a stray bullet hitting one person.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone were unanswered and messages had not received a response at the time of publication.
