The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, has arrested two suspected kidnappers and eight other suspects for various alleged offences across the state.
The suspects were paraded in Akure by the state commander, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, who said one of the suspected kidnappers, 27-year-old Gambo, was arrested in Shasha while allegedly negotiating ransom with the families of his victims.
According to Adeleye, Amotekun operatives had been monitoring Gambo without his knowledge before arresting him behind Shasha in Akure.
The second suspect, 19-year-old Murtala, was reportedly arrested in Molege, Owo, while allegedly attempting to kidnap the wife of his former employer. He was said to have entered the woman’s residence with a locally made firearm and other weapons.
The attempt was foiled after the woman’s husband and neighbours raised an alarm. Amotekun operatives, assisted by members of the Fulani community, reportedly cordoned off the area and arrested the suspect.
Adeleye said Murtala allegedly confessed to involvement in several kidnapping operations and identified the Owo incident as his latest target. He also reportedly admitted to operating around the Akure North axis.
The commander praised members of the Fulani community for assisting security personnel in identifying suspected criminals, stressing that criminal activities should not be attributed to an entire community.
The other eight suspects were arrested over alleged burglary, motorcycle theft and other offences.
Among them was Mustafa Aniliasu, who was described as an alleged specialist in stealing motorcycles and burgling churches and mosques. His latest alleged operation involved the burglary of a church in Elegbeka.
Two other suspects, Joseph, 25, and Friday, 20, were arrested over alleged motorcycle theft and resale. One of them was reportedly accused of keeping a stolen motorcycle before selling it for N70,000.
Another suspect, Duyilemi, was allegedly posing as an Okada rider in the evenings, robbing passengers at knifepoint and stealing their motorcycles. He was arrested in the Sango area of Akure North following a sting operation.
Other suspects included Wahab, who was allegedly arrested for stealing drum sets in Danjuma along Ondo Road; Aminu, 28, who was accused of burgling a church in the Sijuade area; and Kabiru, described as a suspected serial housebreaker who was allegedly arrested for stealing a gas cylinder.
Adeleye said Kabiru had previously been arrested and released on bail several times.
The commander added that all the suspects would be handed over to the police for prosecution.
