Hundreds of tourists and journalists gathered outside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Funchal, Madeira, after a false rumour circulated that football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was set to marry his longtime partner, Georgina Rodríguez.
The crowd had reportedly gathered after reports on social media and in local media suggested that Ronaldo would hold his wedding in his hometown over the weekend.
However, the ceremony taking place at the cathedral was actually for an ordinary couple, Nicole and Fabio, who had no connection to the Portuguese football star.
The large crowd created significant difficulties for the newlyweds, with the bride reportedly struggling to enter the church because of the number of tourists and journalists surrounding the entrance.
Local broadcaster SIC Notícias showed footage of hundreds of people gathered around the cathedral, while church officials described the situation as something they had never experienced before.
The Funchal Cathedral later issued a statement confirming that the bride had faced considerable difficulty entering the church. After the crowds eventually dispersed, the church was able to close its doors and proceed with the wedding ceremony.
Ronaldo himself appeared amused by the incident. The 41-year-old footballer reacted to a post about the situation on Instagram with several laughing emojis, indicating that the wedding rumours were completely unfounded.
Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez have been together for several years and have children together. Despite continued speculation, the couple has not officially announced plans for a formal wedding.
