Army Chief Charges New Soldiers to Uphold Professionalism as Four Suspected Lakurawa Terrorists Arrested in Sokoto

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged newly graduating soldiers of the Nigerian Army to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and operational excellence as they prepare to serve in newly established military formations across the country.

Shaibu gave the charge during the graduation ceremony of the Advanced Infantry Training Programme under Exercise RESTORE HOPE X at the Nigerian Army Training Centre in Kachia, Kaduna State.

The Army Chief said the training was designed to strengthen soldiers’ combat capabilities, leadership skills and readiness to respond effectively to contemporary security challenges.

He said the graduation comes at a time when the Nigerian Army is expanding its operational capacity following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for the restructuring of the Service.

According to him, many of the graduating soldiers will form part of the personnel of the newly established divisions, formations and units.

Shaibu urged the soldiers to justify the resources invested in their training by demonstrating sound judgment, professionalism and commitment to their duties.

He also tasked them with remaining physically fit, mentally alert and technologically proficient while respecting the rule of law, protecting human rights and complying strictly with the rules of engagement.

Meanwhile, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division Garrison have arrested four suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group in Sokoto State.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended while attempting to sell six cows at Darussa Village market in Gudu Local Government Area of the state.

A security source who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) identified the suspects as Usman Bammo, 45; Ali Usman, 23; Abubakar Garba, 30; and Muhammadu Dage, 25.

The source said the livestock was suspected to have been rustled.

Two Tecno mobile phones and N165,000 in cash were also recovered from the suspects.

The arrests, according to the source, followed credible intelligence provided to security agencies as part of ongoing efforts to protect lives and property and combat terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality.

The source commended residents for providing timely information to security personnel and urged communities to continue supporting security agencies in the fight against terrorism and other crimes.

The Chief of Training (Army), Major General Valentine Okoro, also described Exercise RESTORE HOPE X as an important part of the Nigerian Army’s training programme, saying it continues to produce combat-ready personnel through realistic operational exercises, leadership development and counter-insurgency training.
