Nigeria to Observe Two Public Holidays in August 2026

Nigerians are expected to observe two public holidays in August 2026, covering cultural and religious celebrations.

The first is Isese Day, scheduled for Thursday, August 20, which will be observed as a work-free day in four South-West states: Oyo, Lagos, Ogun and Osun.

The second is Eid ul-Mawlid, which is expected to fall on Wednesday, August 26, subject to the official confirmation of the date following the sighting of the crescent moon.

Four states to observe Isese Day

Isese Day is celebrated annually by traditional worshippers to honour Yoruba indigenous religion and culture. Activities typically include prayers, traditional dances, rituals and other cultural events.

Osun State has recognised August 20 as a public holiday since 2013. Oyo and Lagos states followed in 2023, while Ogun State officially recognised the day later that year.

However, Ondo and Ekiti states have not officially recognised Isese Day as a public holiday.

Eid ul-Mawlid holiday awaits confirmation

Unlike Isese Day, which is observed in selected states, Eid ul-Mawlid is a nationwide religious holiday declared by the Federal Government.

If August 26 is officially confirmed as the date for Eid ul-Mawlid, workers across Nigeria will enjoy another public holiday later in the month.

The Ministry of Interior traditionally announces federal public holidays on behalf of the Nigerian government.

The August holidays are expected to provide opportunities for religious observance, family gatherings, travel and cultural activities across the country.

Public holidays expected in August 2026:

- Thursday, August 20: Isese Day — Oyo, Lagos, Ogun and Osun states.
- Wednesday, August 26: Eid ul-Mawlid — nationwide, subject to official confirmation.
