Lionel Messi made his return to Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday after representing Argentina at the FIFA World Cup, coming off the bench as Inter Miami played out a 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew.
The Argentine captain entered the match in the 53rd minute, just two weeks after Argentina's defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. Despite receiving a warm welcome from fans, Messi was unable to find the back of the net, missing two scoring opportunities.
Inter Miami took the lead in the 16th minute through Luis Suárez, who continued his impressive form by scoring his seventh goal in four matches. Columbus Crew equalized in the 34th minute after an own goal by former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro.
Before halftime, Suárez set up Noah Allen to restore Miami's advantage with a well-placed header, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead.
However, Columbus Crew rescued a point late in the game when new signing Brais Méndez curled a superb free-kick into the net in the 84th minute to make it 2-2.
The draw ended Inter Miami's six-match winning streak, although the club remains second in the MLS Eastern Conference standings behind Nashville.
Elsewhere in the Western Conference, Los Angeles FC and Vancouver Whitecaps played out a 1-1 draw. Son Heung-min extended his fine scoring run with a goal for LAFC, while Thomas Müller equalized for Vancouver from the penalty spot in the second half.
Son, who was recently named MVP of the MLS All-Star Game, has now scored four goals in four league matches since the MLS resumed following the World Cup.
