Three youths in Shani Local Government Area of Borno State have allegedly been arrested by the police after sharing a Facebook post about the council’s receipt of approximately ₦3.11 billion in Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds between January and June 2026.
The youths were identified as Salihu Yahaya, Haruna Mohammed and Muhammed Mallum. Sources said they were arrested at the instance of the local government chairman.
The Facebook post reportedly carried an image with the caption: “Shani Local Government Received 3.110 Billion Allocation From Federal Government From January To June 2026.”
According to the report, the figure was based on monthly FAAC disbursement reports from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
Sources close to the youths alleged that they were detained in Shani and threatened with transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or the Department of State Services (DSS) in Maiduguri.
The sources maintained that the youths had done nothing beyond sharing information about the local government’s allocation on Facebook.
The alleged arrests have reportedly caused concern among young people in the area, with some using social media to demand their release.
One source argued that if the allocation figures were incorrect, the authorities should explain the discrepancies rather than arresting those who shared the information.
However, the alleged arrests and the current whereabouts of the three youths could not be independently confirmed at the time of the report.
Attempts to contact the Shani Local Government chairman for comment were unsuccessful, while police authorities in Borno State also could not be reached for their reaction.
FAAC Records Show ₦3.11bn Received
The monthly FAAC reports cited in the report show that Shani LGA received a cumulative ₦3,110,132,578.97 between January and June 2026.
The monthly allocations were:
January: ₦514.80 million
February: ₦533.46 million
March: ₦474.92 million
April: ₦496.11 million
May: ₦551.90 million
June: ₦538.95 million
May recorded the highest monthly allocation, while March recorded the lowest during the six-month period.
The report said VAT and statutory allocations made up the largest portions of the council’s FAAC receipts, while other revenues, including augmentation, the Electronic Money Transfer Levy and solid mineral revenue, varied from month to month.
The case has raised concerns over the handling of publicly available financial information and the freedom of young people to discuss local government finances on social media.
