UEFA has strongly criticized FIFA after the world football governing body overturned the suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun ahead of the USA's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium.
Balogun had received a red card during the USA's victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina and was initially handed an automatic one-match suspension. However, FIFA later suspended the ban for one year, making the striker eligible to feature against Belgium.
In a strongly worded statement, UEFA described the decision as "crossing a red line," arguing that automatic suspensions following red cards should not be changed during an ongoing tournament. The organization warned that such a move could undermine the integrity and credibility of the competition.
The Belgian Football Association also expressed disappointment, saying it was considering all possible options in response to the decision.
Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticized the ruling, insisting that disciplinary decisions should be based on football regulations rather than outside influence.
FIFA defended its action by citing its disciplinary regulations, which allow the implementation of certain sanctions to be suspended under specific circumstances. Balogun's suspension has now been placed on probation for one year, meaning it could be enforced if he commits a similar offence during that period.
