Morocco booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada on Saturday in Houston, ending Canada's historic tournament run.
After a goalless first half, midfielder Azzedine Ounahi broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half with a powerful first-time strike from outside the penalty area. As Canada searched for an equaliser, Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute on a swift counterattack to put the game beyond reach.
Substitute Soufiane Rahimi sealed the win with Morocco's third goal in stoppage time, scoring with the final kick of the match.
Canada, playing in the biggest World Cup match in their history, started brightly and created several early chances. Tani Oluwaseyi forced a fine save from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, while defender Alistair Johnston missed a clear headed opportunity from a corner.
Morocco suffered an early setback when in-form forward Ismael Saibari was forced off through injury, but the North Africans regrouped after the break and dominated the second half.
The match also saw several heated moments, with six players booked in a physical first half, including Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and Canada's Richie Laryea following a confrontation.
The victory sends Morocco into the quarter-finals, where they will face either France or Paraguay as they continue their impressive World Cup campaign. Canada, meanwhile, exit the tournament after making history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
