Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan received a hero’s welcome upon his return to Mogadishu after being denied entry into the United States, preventing him from officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Artan, widely regarded as Africa’s top referee and the first Somali selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup, was turned back at Miami International Airport despite travelling with a valid visa. US authorities cited unspecified security vetting concerns and declared him inadmissible.
The decision sparked disappointment across Somalia, where football fans had celebrated his historic appointment as a major achievement for the country.
Upon his arrival at Aden Adde International Airport on Wednesday, Artan was greeted by government officials, supporters, and well-wishers who praised his accomplishments and expressed solidarity with him.
Addressing the crowd, Artan encouraged Somali youth not to lose faith in their country despite the setback.
“Somalia belongs to all of us. Whether times are good or difficult, our young people should continue to believe in themselves and their nation,” he said.
Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports described the decision as deeply disappointing, revealing that government officials had made extensive diplomatic efforts to reverse the ruling but were unsuccessful.
FIFA stated that immigration matters fall under the authority of US officials and were beyond the organisation’s control. However, some Somali officials argued that FIFA should have done more to protect one of its selected referees.
Artan’s exclusion drew criticism from politicians, sports figures, and human rights advocates worldwide. Former Somali leaders, international football personalities, and global public figures voiced support for the referee, describing the decision as unfair and damaging to the spirit of the World Cup.
Born and raised in Mogadishu, Artan rose from local football pitches to become one of Africa’s most respected referees. He gained international recognition during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was named African Referee of the Year in 2025.
His selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was viewed as a landmark achievement for Somali football and a source of inspiration for young athletes across the country.
Despite the setback, supporters say Artan’s accomplishments remain a symbol of perseverance and hope for Somalia’s next generation.
