Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first footballer to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments after finding the net against Uzbekistan on Tuesday in Houston.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain scored from close range just six minutes into the match, creating a new World Cup record and further cementing his legacy in football history.
Ronaldo’s first World Cup goal came in 2006 against Iran, and his latest achievement highlights his remarkable longevity at the highest level of the sport.
The Al Nassr forward had faced criticism after failing to score in Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match of the tournament. Before the Uzbekistan game, he had gone 10 major international matches without a goal.
His struggle in front of goal was compared with the performances of other top stars including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane.
Ronaldo, who made his international debut in 2003, remains one of the most successful players in football history. He scored 28 goals in 30 league matches for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr this season.
He came close to scoring early in the match before finally making history with his record-breaking goal.
