England began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-2 win over Croatia, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in the first half.
Kane opened the scoring after converting a retaken penalty, following a VAR review that ruled Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic had moved off his line during the first attempt.
Croatia fought back through Martin Baturina and Petar Musa, who brought the match level at 2-2 after England’s defensive mistakes.
However, England regained control shortly after halftime when Jude Bellingham scored to make it 3-2, before substitute Marcus Rashford sealed the victory with a late goal.
The match was a repeat of the 2018 World Cup semi-final, where Croatia defeated England, but Thomas Tuchel’s team secured a strong opening result this time.
Kane’s two goals took his World Cup tally to 10, matching former England striker Gary Lineker as the country’s highest World Cup scorer.
England, who are aiming to win their first major international trophy since 1966, will continue their Group L campaign with confidence after the impressive victory.
