Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 4–1 victory over Iraq on Tuesday.
The Manchester City F.C. striker opened the scoring in the 29th minute in Boston, but Iraq responded through Aymen Hussein, who equalised with a powerful header.
Haaland restored Norway’s lead before half-time after capitalising on a defensive mistake, taking his international goal tally to 57 goals in 51 appearances.
Norway extended their advantage when Leo Østigård headed in a third goal after coming on as a substitute. A late own goal from Iraq completed the 4–1 win.
The result placed Norway at the top of Group I on goal difference, level with France on three points after France defeated Senegal 3–1 earlier.
Norway will face France in their next group match on June 22 in New Jersey.
Iraq, who qualified as the final team for the tournament after a long qualifying campaign, are making their first World Cup appearance since 1986.
