Despite having large populations and passionate football fans, several nations have never reached the FIFA World Cup finals.
According to a report by Planet Football, India tops the list of the world's most populous countries that have never played at a FIFA World Cup. Although India qualified for the 1950 tournament, the team withdrew before the competition and has never appeared in the finals.

Why They Have Not Qualified.
Experts point to several factors, including limited football investment, inadequate infrastructure, competition from other sports, and inconsistent youth development programmes.
For example, cricket remains the dominant sport in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, while Ethiopia's closest attempt came during qualification for the 2014 World Cup when it reached the final African playoff round before losing to Nigeria.
The ranking highlights that population size alone does not guarantee success in international football. Strong domestic leagues, quality coaching, youth development and sustained investment remain crucial for reaching the world's biggest football tournament.
