Danish football star Christian Eriksen has returned home and is recovering after collapsing during Denmark's international friendly against Ukraine national football team on Sunday.
The 34-year-old midfielder suffered a health scare in the 65th minute of the match in Odense when he suddenly clutched his chest and fell to the ground. Medical staff quickly attended to him as players from both teams formed a protective circle around him on the pitch.
Eriksen was later able to walk off the field unassisted before being taken to hospital for further examinations. The match was subsequently abandoned with Denmark leading 2-1.
In a message shared on social media, Eriksen reassured fans that he was recovering well.
> “I am doing well and I am home with my family. My recovery has already started,” he said.
The midfielder explained that the incident was different from the cardiac arrest he suffered during the UEFA European Championship in 2021. He credited his implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) for protecting him during the latest episode.
According to Eriksen, the device functioned exactly as intended by delivering a shock when it detected a dangerous heart rhythm.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen also stated that the ICD responded appropriately during the incident.
Eriksen thanked the medical teams, teammates and supporters for their messages of support and said he plans to focus on recovery, spending time with his family and enjoying a vacation before returning to football activities.
Following the incident, tributes and well-wishes poured in from across the football world, including messages from Lautaro Martínez, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire.
Eriksen currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany after previous spells with Brentford F.C., Manchester United F.C. and Inter Milan.
His 2021 cardiac arrest during a match against Finland shocked the football world, but he successfully resumed his professional career after receiving the ICD implant. The latest update from Eriksen has provided relief to fans and teammates concerned about his condition.
