Tournament debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by holding former champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their Group H opener on Monday.
The standout performer was veteran Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who made seven crucial saves to deny the Spanish attack and secure a historic point for his nation.
Spain dominated possession with 74 percent of the ball and created numerous chances but failed to break down the resilient Cape Verde defence. Even the introduction of Lamine Yamal from the bench could not inspire a breakthrough for coach Luis de la Fuente.
The result sparked celebrations among Cape Verde's players and supporters, as the Blue Sharks marked their first-ever World Cup appearance with an impressive defensive display against one of the tournament favourites.
Cape Verde, a nation of about 525,000 people, qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament and earned a memorable result in their maiden World Cup match.
Elsewhere on Monday, Saudi Arabia were scheduled to face Uruguay in Group H, while Belgium prepared to take on Egypt, led by Mohamed Salah, in Group G.
