Canada made history at the FIFA World Cup on Thursday night after securing their first-ever tournament victory with a convincing 6-0 win over Qatar in a dramatic Group B encounter at BC Place, Vancouver.
A brilliant hat-trick from Jonathan David led Canada’s dominant performance, with Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also finding the net. Qatar’s Mohamed Manai scored an own goal as the hosts completely controlled the match.
The game was disrupted by a serious injury to Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone shortly after halftime. Kone was left in pain following a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo and was later taken off the field on a stretcher while receiving oxygen.
Madibo’s yellow card was upgraded to a straight red after a VAR review, leaving Qatar with only nine players after Homam Ahmed had already been dismissed in the first half.
With the advantage, Canada increased the pressure. Saliba scored a stunning free-kick in the 64th minute and dedicated the goal to injured teammate Kone by holding up his jersey.
Canada continued their attack, with Manai turning the ball into his own net before David completed his hat-trick in stoppage time.
David became only the second player to score a hat-trick at the 2026 World Cup and the first Canadian male player to score multiple goals in a World Cup match.
Despite the historic win, David said Kone’s injury affected the team’s celebrations.
The match ended with tension as players from both teams clashed after the final whistle, forcing officials and staff to separate them.
The victory puts Canada in a strong position to top Group B, needing only a draw against Switzerland in their final group match.
