More than 400 people were arrested across France after celebrations following Paris Saint-Germain's UEFA Champions League triumph over Arsenal turned violent, leaving several police officers injured and causing significant property damage.
French authorities reported that 416 individuals were detained nationwide, including 280 arrests in Paris. The disturbances also left seven police officers injured and resulted in damage to vehicles, businesses, and public infrastructure.
Thousands of PSG supporters poured into the streets after the French club successfully defended its Champions League title, gathering at major locations including the Champs-Élysées and the Parc des Princes stadium. While many fans celebrated peacefully, clashes erupted in some areas as groups of supporters confronted police, set off fireworks, and vandalized property.
Security forces deployed tear gas in parts of central Paris to disperse crowds after incidents of violence and destruction were reported. Images and videos shared online showed burning cars, shattered storefronts, and fireworks illuminating the night sky.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the violence, describing the scenes as unacceptable and stressing that celebrations should not be used as a pretext for disorder.
The unrest revived memories of previous PSG title celebrations that were marred by violence, including incidents during last year's festivities that reportedly resulted in two deaths.
On the pitch, Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Champions League crown after defeating Arsenal on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time in the final played at the Puskás Aréna.
Despite the disturbances, victory celebrations were expected to continue on Sunday, with PSG players scheduled to parade through Paris near the Eiffel Tower before attending a reception hosted by Emmanuel Macron.
