President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s bid to host two major football events — the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards and the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The approval was confirmed during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, following discussions between President Tinubu and CAF President Patrice Motsepe. Senior officials, including Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, were present at the meeting.
The CAF Ordinary General Assembly, scheduled for October 2026, will bring together presidents of all 54 CAF member associations, zonal union representatives, and top football administrators from across Africa.
The CAF Awards ceremony, one of the continent’s most prestigious football events, celebrates outstanding players, coaches, and teams across Africa.
Nigeria has hosted the awards ceremony four times previously, with the last edition held in Lagos in 2015, where top African football stars were honoured.
Football officials say hosting the 2026 edition will strengthen Nigeria’s role in African football administration and boost its global sporting profile.
The NFF described the approval as a major milestone, noting that preparations will now begin for both events, which are expected to attract widespread international attention.
