INEC Puts Voter Revalidation Plan on Hold After Stakeholder Backlash.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended its proposed voter revalidation exercise following widespread concerns from political stakeholders and civil society groups.

The exercise, which was initially slated to begin in April 2026 as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections, was aimed at updating Nigeria’s voter register. However, the commission has now instructed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to immediately halt any arrangements, including planning, public announcements, and logistics tied to the exercise.

Stakeholders had raised several objections, including:

The risk of creating confusion within the existing voter registration framework

Questions over the timing, given the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process

Fears that the move could discourage voter participation and erode public trust in the electoral system
