Ex-Chelsea Owner Abramovich Loses Third Bid to Overturn EU Sanctions.

A top European Union court has rejected Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s third attempt to overturn sanctions imposed on him following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, was placed on the EU’s asset-freeze and visa-ban list in 2022 over his alleged close ties to the Kremlin.

The EU General Court dismissed his argument that the bloc was unfairly targeting him because of his public profile.

The court ruled that Abramovich was legally sanctioned because of his stakes in major Russian metals companies, including Evraz and Norilsk Nickel, which it said provided a substantial source of revenue for the Russian government.

Abramovich had previously challenged the sanctions in court, but his cases were rejected in 2023 and 2025.

He is among several wealthy Russian businessmen who have sought to challenge EU sanctions imposed following the war in Ukraine.
