The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59% of those who sat for the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, over allegations of examination malpractice.
Speaking during the official release of the results in Lagos, the Head of WAEC's Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, said the malpractice rate dropped from 9.7% in 2025 to 8.59% in 2026. However, he expressed concern over the increasing use of mobile phones in examination halls and organized cheating in some schools.
According to him, candidates, schools, supervisors, and teachers found guilty of examination malpractice will face appropriate sanctions. He also disclosed that affected candidates can submit appeals through WAEC's official complaints platform.
Despite the withheld results, 1,200,514 candidates (61.54%) obtained at least five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics, meeting the minimum requirements for admission into many tertiary institutions. This represents a slight decline from 62.96% recorded in 2025.
A total of 1,959,668 candidates registered for the examination from 24,207 schools across Nigeria, Benin Republic, Côte d'Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea, while 1,950,726 candidates eventually sat for the examination.
WAEC also revealed that 1,687,378 candidates (86.50%) earned at least five credit passes, with or without English Language and Mathematics.
The Council said 94.05% of candidates have had their results fully processed and released, while the results of 116,031 candidates (5.95%) are still being processed due to technical issues.
In addition, WAEC announced that results of candidates sponsored by state governments that are indebted to the Council will remain withheld until the outstanding payments are settled.
Candidates can check their results online through the official WAEC results portal, while digital certificates will be available within 48 hours after checking their results. Printed certificates are expected to be ready within 90 days.
