US authorities have charged a 35-year-old woman with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation after she allegedly told an FBI informant that she wanted to destroy the New York State Capitol and kill lawmakers.
According to court documents, Jessica Bowie allegedly became an online supporter of the Islamic State group and posted anti-American messages, including statements expressing support for the perpetrators of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Prosecutors allege that Bowie told an FBI informant that she wanted to attack the Capitol in Albany, New York, and sought advice on how to make explosives.
She allegedly discussed observing security arrangements around the Capitol and considered disguising herself as a food-delivery driver to gain access to the building and plant a bomb.
Court documents also allege that Bowie wanted to flee to Syria after the attack and could later return to the United States to target other prominent locations, including New York City's Times Square.
Investigators said she had obtained a DoorDash delivery bag and bomb components, including nails that could be used as shrapnel.
Bowie was arrested by FBI agents on August 19. She was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
Her lawyer had not immediately responded to requests for comment.
The New York State Capitol, located in Albany, houses both chambers of the state's legislature and serves as a major centre of New York's state government.
