Micron Technology has announced plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade in a new research laboratory in Boise, Idaho, aimed at advancing memory technology and developing computing systems for the growing artificial intelligence industry.
The company said the Micron Research Labs will bring together customers, universities, government agencies and other semiconductor industry partners to work on new technologies and breakthroughs.
The investment builds on more than $250 billion that Micron has separately committed to manufacturing and research and development activities across the United States.
The Boise facility will also be linked to Micron’s research operations in the United States, Europe, Japan, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
Demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) has surged as companies expand AI infrastructure. HBM is an important component of modern AI systems because it enables rapid movement of data to AI processors.
Micron said construction of the new research facility is expected to begin in 2027. The laboratory will be designed to accommodate hundreds of researchers and host international conferences and technical workshops.
The investment comes as the US government seeks to strengthen domestic semiconductor production, reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and maintain the country's position in the global AI race.
