Uganda is mourning the tragic death of SC Villa captain David Owori, who succumbed to injuries after a violent robbery attack near his home in Kampala.
The 27-year-old defender was reportedly ambushed on Tuesday night in the Makindye area while returning home. According to witnesses, a group of suspected robbers attacked him with paving stones, stole his personal belongings, and fled the scene.
Owori was initially treated at a nearby medical facility before being transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he later died from his injuries.
SC Villa confirmed the death of their captain, describing him as more than just a footballer.
«"We have lost more than a player—we have lost a leader, a brother, and a friend," the club said in a statement.»
Club spokesperson Asan Kasingye explained that Owori was attacked just a short distance from his residence and suffered life-threatening injuries before being rushed to hospital.
Kampala police have launched an investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said officers had examined the crime scene and were collecting evidence to identify and arrest those responsible.
Popularly known as "Colgate," Owori was one of Uganda's respected footballers. He captained SC Villa and also represented the Uganda national team, the Cranes.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) paid tribute to the late defender, describing him as a role model and an inspiration both on and off the pitch.
Owori returned to SC Villa in 2023 after playing in Europe and played a crucial role in helping the club win its 17th Uganda Premier League title in 2024, ending a 20-year championship drought. His outstanding performances earned him a contract extension until 2027.
His death has sparked widespread grief across Uganda, with fans, teammates, football officials, and political leaders calling for justice and stronger action against violent crime in Kampala.
