A 24-year-old footballer has died after a lightning strike hit a football pitch during a match in southern Thailand, leaving 12 other players injured.
The tragic incident occurred on August 4, 2026, at Santiphap Stadium in Narathiwat Province during a heavy monsoon storm. As rain poured down, a lightning bolt struck the pitch, causing a powerful flash that knocked several players to the ground.
The victim, Safwan Awae, collapsed immediately after being struck. Spectators and officials rushed onto the field to assist him before emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he later died from his injuries.
According to local police chief Thun Sirikhunt, emergency teams did everything possible to revive the player, but the injuries caused by the lightning strike proved fatal.
Twelve other players suffered burns and other injuries in the incident, including 22-year-old Malaysian footballer Alif Ezzahan Zulkifli, who was among those receiving treatment.
Safwan Awae had recently signed for FC Yala, a club competing in Thailand's Thai League 3 Southern Region.
The incident has renewed concerns over the dangers of continuing outdoor sporting events during severe thunderstorms, with officials urging organizers to suspend matches whenever lightning is detected.
