Paris Saint-Germain have won the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2–1 in an entertaining final in Salzburg.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG in the 20th minute before Aston Villa teenager Brian Madjo equalised just before half-time. The 17-year-old made history by becoming the youngest player to score in the competition.
PSG regained the lead in the 62nd minute when Désiré Doué finished clinically after a pass from Ousmane Dembélé exposed Villa’s defensive line. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded following a VAR review.
Aston Villa pushed hard for another equaliser and came close on several occasions. Warren Zaïre-Emery produced an outstanding defensive block to deny João Gomes, while goalkeeper Matvey Safonov also made important saves.
Emi Buendía headed wide in stoppage time as Villa missed a late opportunity to force the match into a penalty shootout.
The victory gives PSG another major trophy after their recent Champions League success, while Aston Villa can take plenty of encouragement from their competitive performance against the European champions.
