Lionel Messi’s Father, Jorge Messi, Dies at 68

Jorge Messi, the father and longtime representative of Argentine football star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.

According to reports from Argentine media, Jorge died at about 10 p.m. on Friday at a sanatorium in Rosario, Argentina, following a prolonged illness.

Jorge played a significant role in shaping his son’s extraordinary football career. He was instrumental in helping Lionel obtain medical treatment for a growth hormone deficiency during his childhood after efforts to secure the treatment in Argentina proved unsuccessful.

He later helped arrange Lionel’s move to Spain, where the youngster joined Barcelona at the age of 13. Jorge remained with his son during the difficult early years of his European career while the rest of the family stayed in Rosario.

Reflecting on those challenging years, Messi previously recalled how his father asked him whether he wanted to continue pursuing his football dream in Spain or return home. Messi chose to remain in Spain, with Jorge staying by his side.

That decision proved crucial as Messi went on to become one of the greatest footballers in history, winning numerous major trophies and individual awards with Barcelona, Argentina and other clubs.

Jorge also managed several aspects of his son’s professional and commercial affairs, including negotiations with major international brands, while largely keeping away from the public spotlight.

His health became a concern during the 2026 World Cup after Messi appeared emotional following Argentina’s opening match. After scoring a hat-trick, Messi revealed that his emotional reaction was linked to difficult family circumstances.

The Messi family later said Jorge was under medical supervision and was recovering within the limits of his condition.

Born in Argentina, Jorge trained as a chemical technician and worked for Acindar, an Argentine steel company, eventually becoming a manager. He had also played football as a youngster in the Newell’s Old Boys youth system before leaving the sport after being called up for military service.

Jorge Messi’s death marks the loss of a man who remained largely behind the scenes but played a pivotal role in the development and management of Lionel Messi’s remarkable football career.
