FIFA President Gianni Infantino's campaign for another term has suffered a major setback after the football associations of Serbia, Sweden, and Wales withdrew their support, citing concerns over governance, transparency, and leadership.
The move follows the collapse of FIFA's proposed plan to sell about a 20 percent stake in a new commercial entity responsible for managing competitions, including the FIFA World Cup. The investment plan, which was expected to generate up to $4.2 billion, was abandoned after facing strong opposition from stakeholders.
In a statement, the Football Association of Serbia said it had reversed its earlier endorsement of Infantino, explaining that recent developments had seriously damaged the reputation of both FIFA and its president.
Similarly, the Swedish Football Association announced that it no longer had confidence in Infantino's leadership, pointing to recurring issues related to governance, transparency, and management within the organization.
Wales became the first national football association to formally withdraw its backing earlier on Monday, while reports indicate that England's Football Association is also expected to end its support.
The growing opposition represents a significant challenge for Infantino's re-election campaign as criticism over FIFA's leadership and governance continues to intensify.
