Barcelona have canceled a planned ceremony to honour the club’s eight players who helped Spain win the World Cup this summer.
The tribute was scheduled for Thursday before Barcelona’s LaLiga match against Athletic Club at Camp Nou. Other Spanish clubs with players from the World Cup-winning squad had already honoured their players before their respective home matches.
However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta announced on Wednesday that the ceremony had been called off following tensions surrounding an incident involving Barça supporters before Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Elche.
Some Barcelona fans were reportedly beaten by national police officers, while Estelada flags, which are associated with Catalan independence, were confiscated.
Laporta said the ceremony was canceled because the current situation was not considered an appropriate context for the event. He added that the Royal Spanish Football Federation understood the club’s decision.
“Football should be used to unite, not to create certain confrontations,” Laporta said.
He also condemned what he described as the disproportionate actions of the police and called for any officers found responsible for assaulting supporters to face appropriate punishment and sanctions.
Laporta said Barcelona hoped the incident would be properly addressed so that Catalan supporters and Barça fans could carry the Estelada flag without fear of violence or discrimination from security forces.
