Mexico's hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1986 came to an end after a thrilling 3-2 defeat to England at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
Backed by more than 80,000 passionate home fans and playing with a numerical advantage for much of the second half, El Tri fought hard but failed to overturn England's lead. England's victory was inspired by two quick first-half goals from Jude Bellingham, who struck twice within 98 seconds to put the visitors in control.
Mexico, who had not conceded a goal in their first four matches of the tournament, managed to score twice but could not find the equaliser, extending their long-standing curse of exiting the competition in the Round of 16.
Head coach Javier Aguirre described the defeat as heartbreaking, praising his players for their effort while acknowledging the disappointment of the home supporters. England manager Thomas Tuchel also commended the Mexican team and fans, saying they should be proud of their spirited performance.
Following the tournament, Aguirre will leave his role as Mexico coach, with former captain Rafael Márquez set to take over ahead of the team's next chapter.
