Nine people are still in critical condition following a deadly train crash near Bedford, about 60 miles (100km) north of London, in which one train driver was killed.
Two passenger trains travelling towards London collided at around 5:15 p.m. local time on Friday. The driver of one of the trains died at the scene.
British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said on Saturday that more than 80 people received hospital treatment after the crash. She added that 28 people remain in hospital, including nine in critical condition.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident.
A video shared on social media by a passenger showed the damaged front of one train trapped against the rear of another, while the carriages remained upright.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as a “devastating incident” and expressed sympathy for those affected.
Buckingham Palace also released a statement saying King Charles was deeply saddened by the crash and was being updated on the situation. He sent condolences to the family of the person who died and to all those injured.
