Balogun Nets Brace as USA Crush Paraguay 4-1 in World Cup Opener

The United States kicked off their home campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles on Friday.

Forward Folarin Balogun starred for the hosts, scoring two goals, while Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla accidentally put the ball into his own net early in the match. Substitute Gio Reyna added a late fourth goal to complete a dominant performance for coach Mauricio Pochettino's side.

The Americans entered the tournament under pressure following a series of disappointing results in pre-World Cup friendly matches. However, they quickly silenced critics with an energetic first-half display that saw them race into a commanding 3-0 lead before halftime.

Speaking after the match, Christian Pulisic praised his teammates for their intensity and determination.

"It was a great start from the team," Pulisic said. "We played with energy and deserved the victory. But this is only the beginning, and we must stay focused on the matches ahead."

A crowd of more than 70,000 fans attended the opening match at SoFi Stadium, with celebrities including Katy Perry, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Halle Berry present.

The United States maintained pressure throughout the game, with Balogun's two goals helping secure a comfortable victory. Paraguay managed a consolation goal in the 73rd minute through Mauricio, but the hosts remained firmly in control.

The result gives the United States a perfect start in Group D as they prepare for upcoming matches against Australia and Turkey.
