Nigerian Forward Victor Udoh Dies at 21 in Abuja, FA Confirms

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the death of 21-year-old forward Victor Udoh, who previously played for Southampton and Royal Antwerp. He was found dead in Abuja on Monday, May 25, 2026.

NFF officials described the news as shocking and deeply distressing, saying the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Authorities have yet to confirm an official cause of death, though early local reports suggested possibilities such as food or alcohol-related poisoning. Investigations are ongoing.

Udoh reportedly returned to Nigeria after the end of the European season and was in Abuja the night before his death, where he had gone out with friends. He was discovered the following morning, according to local reports.

Former clubs and teammates have begun paying tribute. Royal Antwerp expressed sadness over the passing of the young striker, while Southampton also released a statement describing the news as “devastating” and extended condolences to his family.

Udoh began his football journey in Abuja before moving to Europe in 2023, where he joined Royal Antwerp. His performances earned him a move to Southampton, where he featured mainly for the club’s under-21 side but did not make a senior appearance. He later joined Czech second-tier side Dynamo České Budějovice in 2025 on a long-term contract.

Born in Akwa Ibom State on October 18, 2004, Udoh was regarded as one of Nigeria’s promising young forwards before his sudden death.
