The African Democratic Congress has suspended the collation of its primary election results in Jigawa State following reports of violence, malpractice and internal disputes during the exercise.
The decision was announced on Wednesday by the Chief Returning Officer, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Zaki Ahmed, at the collation centre in Dutse, the state capital.
Ahmed said the process could not continue because of unresolved complaints and security concerns arising from several local government areas.
According to him, results had been received from 19 of the 27 local government areas before the exercise was halted, while reports from Auyo, Roni and Kazaure were still being awaited.
He disclosed that serious irregularities were recorded in some councils, while threats of violence in Gwaram Local Government created fears of major disruptions. In Guri Local Government, the election reportedly did not hold due to disagreements among rival party factions.
The ADC primaries, which began earlier in the week, were reportedly affected by allegations of intimidation, cancellation of results and clashes between supporters of different camps.
Party insiders linked the crisis mainly to the fiercely contested governorship primary involving Hon. Adamu Jumbo and Senator Sabo Nakudu, who recently defected from the APC to the ADC with a large number of supporters.
An election observer, Dayyabu Musa, described the atmosphere at the collation venue as tense, with heavy security presence as party officials struggled to manage growing disputes among delegates and supporters.
Despite the suspension, Ahmed said the collation process would resume after the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, with officials expected to reconvene in Dutse to continue announcing results.
The development highlights ongoing challenges facing opposition parties in Nigeria, where internal disputes and controversies during primary elections have continued to raise concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
