Since the FIFA World Cup was launched in 1930, many countries have qualified for football’s biggest tournament, but only one nation has managed to appear in every single edition of the competition.
Brazil remains the only country never to miss a FIFA World Cup. The South American giants are also the most successful team in the tournament’s history, winning the trophy five times — in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002.
Football legends including Pelé, Romário, Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, Kaká and Neymar have all represented Brazil on the world stage.
Despite intense competition in South American qualifiers, Brazil has consistently secured qualification for every edition of the tournament.
Several other football powers came close to achieving the same feat before missing out at different times.
Germany failed to participate in the 1930 World Cup and were barred from the 1950 tournament after World War II, although they have gone on to win four World Cup titles.
Italy also missed the inaugural tournament and later suffered shocking qualification failures for the 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions despite being four-time champions.
Argentina skipped the 1938, 1950 and 1954 tournaments due to political and administrative reasons. However, they later became one of football’s most successful nations, lifting the trophy in 1978, 1986 and 2022.
Spain missed several early World Cups before becoming regular participants and eventually winning their first title in 2010 in South Africa.
