Widespread Protests in West Bank Over Israel’s Controversial Death Penalty Law.

Palestinians across the West Bank staged a general strike and demonstrations on Wednesday to protest a new Israeli law that imposes the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks.

The legislation, approved by the Israeli Knesset on March 30, applies the death penalty to Palestinians tried in military courts for lethal offences. Critics say the law disproportionately targets Palestinians, while Jewish Israelis face civilian courts for similar crimes, creating a two-tiered justice system.

The strike saw shops close and streets empty in cities like Ramallah, reflecting widespread public outrage. Palestinian leaders and rights groups condemned the law as discriminatory and a threat to due process and human rights.

The law has drawn strong international criticism. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights called it a violation of international law, while the European Union described it as “very concerning.” Spain’s prime minister labeled the legislation a “step towards apartheid.”

The law comes amid heightened tensions in the region and is seen by many observers as a move that could exacerbate conflict and deepen divisions between Israelis and Palestinians.
