Italy Suspends Defence Cooperation Agreement with Israel Amid Rising Tensions.

Italy has suspended its long-standing defence cooperation agreement with Israel, signaling a significant shift in diplomatic and military relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that the government has halted the automatic renewal of the defence pact, originally signed in 2003. The agreement had facilitated collaboration in military training, defence technology, and arms development.

The decision comes amid growing criticism from Italian authorities over Israel’s recent military operations, particularly in Lebanon, where civilian casualties have been reported. Tensions escalated further following an incident in which Israeli forces reportedly fired warning shots near Italian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations mission, damaging a vehicle.

Officials including Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto were involved in the decision-making process, reflecting a coordinated response within the Italian government.

Italy, traditionally considered one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe, now joins a growing number of countries expressing concern over the broader Middle East conflict, including developments in Gaza and rising tensions involving Iran.

The suspension underscores increasing divisions among Western allies and highlights the evolving geopolitical landscape as the crisis in the Middle East continues to unfold.
