The Benue State Government has evacuated more than 600 students of Benue origin from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) in Plateau State following a deadly attack on communities in Jos North Local Government Area that left several people dead.
The evacuation operation, which began on Thursday, April 2, 2026, aims to safeguard the lives and welfare of students amid the escalating security situation. Buses have been transporting students and other Benue indigenes back to Benue State.
Earlier, UNIJOS management postponed first-semester examinations and ordered the immediate evacuation of students from hostels and residential areas in response to the unrest.
Governor Hyacinth Alia emphasized that the decision was necessary to protect students, while discussions continue with Plateau State authorities to restore peace and hold those responsible accountable.
The attacks follow a surge in violence in Jos, prompting curfews and heightened security as authorities work to stabilize the region.
