Morocco is preparing to build what is expected to become the world’s largest football stadium ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The proposed Grand Stade Hassan II, located near Casablanca, will have a seating capacity of approximately 115,000 spectators, making it one of the most ambitious stadium projects ever undertaken.
The stadium has been designed by global architecture and design firm Populous, in collaboration with Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi. Its design combines modern, futuristic architecture with elements of traditional Moroccan culture.
A major feature of the stadium will be its large tent-like roof, inspired by the traditional Moroccan “moussem” festivals. The roof will consist of an aluminum lattice designed to resemble fabric and will be supported by 32 stairways.
The complex will also include extensive gardens and green spaces, creating an oasis-like environment around and beneath the stadium.
The venue is expected to include dedicated sections for passionate supporters, with nearly 30,000 general-admission places, while its main stands will feature several levels of hospitality facilities with thousands of premium seats.
Morocco hopes the stadium will strengthen its bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final, although the final match venue has yet to be officially determined.
Beyond the tournament, the Grand Stade Hassan II is planned as a long-term sporting and entertainment hub. It is expected to serve as a home venue for the Morocco national football team as well as Casablanca-based clubs Raja CA and Wydad AC.
The wider development is also expected to feature training facilities, aquatic complexes, hotels, retail outlets and leisure spaces, with the project intended to contribute to urban development in the El Mansouria area, north of Casablanca.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, with several centenary matches scheduled to take place in South America.
If completed as planned, the Grand Stade Hassan II would become a major landmark in Moroccan football and one of the world's most spectacular sporting venues.
