Former Kano Pillars, Heartland United and Lobi Stars defender Chinedu Ozor has reportedly died after collapsing during a football match in Katsina State on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old defender, who had recently joined Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Katsina United, reportedly collapsed about 10–13 minutes into a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
Club medical personnel immediately rushed to assist Ozor and attempted to revive him before he was taken to a hospital for further treatment. However, he was reportedly pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The incident has plunged Katsina United, Ozor’s teammates, officials and supporters into mourning.
Ozor had only recently been unveiled as a new Katsina United signing during the ongoing transfer window, having previously represented clubs including Kano Pillars, Heartland United and Lobi Stars.
The exact circumstances surrounding his sudden death have not yet been officially disclosed.
The tragic incident has also renewed concerns about the availability of adequate emergency medical services at football venues and the importance of immediate medical intervention when players suffer sudden medical emergencies during matches.
Katsina United is expected to release an official statement on the incident.
