Nigerian Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr has resumed rehearsals just days after revealing that she underwent major surgery and experienced a more difficult recovery than initially expected.
The Grammy-nominated singer, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, shared a video of herself rehearsing with dancers ahead of her scheduled appearance on NBC’s TODAY show at Rockefeller Centre in New York City.
A bandage was visible on her body as she participated in the rehearsal, marking one of her first public appearances since announcing her surgery.
“NYC, come see me perform on the TODAY show at Rockefeller Centre tomorrow morning! I wanna see all my Mobstarrs front and center,” the singer wrote while inviting fans to the performance.
She also announced that the first 100 fans to arrive at the corner of 48th Street and Rockefeller Plaza would receive golden tickets for a special prize.
Ayra Starr had disclosed on July 30 that she underwent major surgery. In an Instagram Story, she apologised to her fans, known as Mobstarrs, for being less active online and explained that her recovery had not gone as quickly as expected.
“I had major surgery a few days ago. I was hoping it would be a quick recovery, but it was more complicated than they expected,” she said.
The singer did not reveal details about the nature of the surgery but said she needed time to rest and recover.
Despite the health setback, Ayra Starr has continued promoting her upcoming project, Starrgirl. She also revealed that she had signed copies of her first vinyl records and CD inserts for fans who pre-ordered the project.
Her return to rehearsals signals a gradual resumption of her public activities as she prepares to reconnect with fans and continue promoting her music.
Ayra Starr has established herself as one of Nigeria’s leading Afrobeats stars since joining Mavin Records and releasing her self-titled debut EP in 2021. She later released her debut album, 19 & Dangerous, which featured hit songs such as Bloody Samaritan.
Her 2022 hit single Rush further boosted her international profile and earned her first Grammy nomination in the Best African Music Performance category.
In 2024, she released her second album, The Year I Turned 21, which further cemented her position on the global music scene.
In 2026, Ayra Starr received another Grammy nomination for Gimme Dat, her collaboration with Nigerian superstar Wizkid.
As she continues her recovery, fans are now looking forward to seeing the singer back on stage and returning fully to her busy music schedule.
