UEFA Removes Referee After Controversial Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid Champions League Clash

UEFA has reportedly taken disciplinary action against referee István Kovács following widespread controversy in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg between FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.

The match, which ended 2–0 in favour of Atlético Madrid, was overshadowed by several disputed officiating decisions that triggered strong reactions from players, coaches, and fans.

One of the key incidents involved a potential penalty appeal for Barcelona after a suspected handball by an Atlético defender inside the box. The referee chose not to award a penalty, and VAR also did not intervene.

Earlier in the match, Barcelona were also reduced to 10 men following a red card incident involving defender Pau Cubarsí, a decision that further fueled debate over the referee’s performance.

Following internal review, UEFA has reportedly decided to sideline referee István Kovács for the remainder of the season due to what officials described as serious officiating errors.

Although he has been removed from Champions League duties for the rest of the campaign, reports suggest the decision is not a permanent ban, meaning he could return to future international assignments.

UEFA is said to have received an official complaint from Barcelona, while head coach Hansi Flick criticised VAR decisions, arguing they had a major impact on the outcome of the match.
