The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), following a voice vote during Wednesday’s plenary session.
The confirmation came after strong backing from Muhammad Danjuma Goje, who described Yuguda as highly qualified and experienced. Goje told lawmakers that the nominee began his career at the CBN as a graduate trainee and rose through the ranks to become a director.
He further highlighted Yuguda’s tenure as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, noting his performance in the role as commendable.
Lawmakers subsequently dissolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the report of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions before approving the nomination.
In a related decision, the Senate also confirmed Peggy Ufanima Onwu as an Independent Director on the board of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation. The approval was also granted through a voice vote.
Announcing the decision, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the upper chamber had formally endorsed the appointment after reviewing the committee’s report.
Both nominees had earlier undergone screening by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions before their confirmation.
