What is Hooke's law of elasticity?

When a force is applied to an elastic spring or string, the length of the material increases by a certain amount. If the force is removed, the length returns to it's former value. When the stretching force is doubled, the extension of the spring doubles. This relationship between the stretching force and the extension is given by Hooke's law which holds until a certain limit of force is reached.
