Tottenham Hotspur suffered their second consecutive Premier League defeat after losing 2–0 to Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
The result leaves Tottenham without a goal from their opening two league matches under manager Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs had previously been beaten 3–0 by Brentford.
Tottenham dominated much of the first half but failed to convert their opportunities. Newcastle goalkeeper Lucas Hornicek produced important saves, including efforts from Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Newcastle eventually took control after the break. In the 62nd minute, Anthony Elanga received a headed pass from Amar Dedić following a long diagonal ball from Nico González. Elanga turned sharply inside the penalty area and fired a shot that went in off the left post.
Tottenham tried to respond with three substitutions, but they struggled to create a clear chance to equalise.
Newcastle doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute when substitute Nick Woltemade headed a corner into the six-yard box. Yoane Wissa reacted quickly, hooking the ball over his head and into the net.
Tottenham's supporters expressed their frustration at the final whistle, with sections of the home crowd booing the team.
De Zerbi admitted that his side still needed time to develop after a major summer rebuild. Tottenham spent around £320 million on eight new players during the transfer window.
> “We are not a team yet. We have to improve a few things,” De Zerbi said.
He also insisted that Tottenham had performed better than Newcastle for much of the match but lost their shape after conceding.
Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, meanwhile, praised his players for delivering his tactical plan and described the performance as “incredible.”
The victory gives Newcastle their first Premier League win of the season and provides an encouraging start to Jaissle's tenure.
Tottenham will now look to respond quickly as they attempt to recover from a difficult opening to the campaign.
