NPC Chairman Aminu Yusuf Dies After Prolonged Illness

Dr Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), has reportedly died after battling health complications.

According to a source within the commission, Yusuf died at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja on Friday, August 28, 2026, shortly after the Friday prayer.

The source said the NPC chairman became ill about five days earlier while preparing for a trip to Rwanda. He had reportedly been suffering from complications linked to diabetes.

Yusuf was also said to have collapsed several times in his office and during public events. On March 13, he reportedly collapsed during a press briefing and the official launch of the APLS 13 Report after experiencing difficulty breathing. Medical personnel at the event reportedly attended to him before he was taken to hospital.

The source said Yusuf’s remains were transported to Minna, Niger State, for burial on Friday evening.

Yusuf was appointed Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Tinubu in 2025 and was subsequently confirmed by the Senate. He was sworn into office on December 3, 2025, alongside two other members of the NPC board.

At the time of his swearing-in, the State House identified him as a 65-year-old chairman.

Yusuf held a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also obtained a doctorate in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

His reported death comes less than a year after he assumed leadership of the commission, which is responsible for population data and the registration of vital events in Nigeria.

However, as of the time of the report, the National Population Commission had not officially confirmed his death.
