The new Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, was sworn in after the tenure of former Governor Yahaya Bello, who was in charge of the state since 2015 has ended.
Ododo who won the governorship election held in 2023 was the second person after Yahaya Bello to become the governor of the state who came from the Ebira tribe, a minority in Kogi state since the return of democracy in 1999.
Since 1999, all the Governors of the state namely Abubakar Audu, Ibrahim Idris and Idris Wada are all from the Igala tribe which is the majority in the state.
The Ebira tribe's opportunity to rule the state came in 2015 when the Kogi state election was held where the INEC State Electoral Commission was about to declare Abubakar Audu of the APC and a member of the Igala tribe as the winner of the Election but He dies, at that time INEC declared the election as incomplete where the APC appointed Yahaya Bello, a member of the minority Ebira tribe, who came second in the primary election, as its candidate and who He will inherit the success of Abubakar Audu.
