Ghana and Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football with the Black Stars.
The 32-year-old striker made the announcement on Friday, September 11, 2026, saying he believed the time had come to end his journey with the Ghana national team.
Williams said he was leaving the team with pride and satisfaction, knowing that he had given his best whenever he wore the national shirt.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end. I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt,” he said.
Williams represented Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars were eliminated after a 1–0 defeat to Colombia.
He initially represented Spain at youth level and received a call-up to the Spanish Under-21 team in March 2015. However, he never made a major competitive appearance for the senior Spanish national team.
Born in Spain to Ghanaian parents, Williams switched his international allegiance to Ghana in 2022. He made his Black Stars debut in September that year in a 3–0 friendly defeat to Brazil.
He also featured in all three of Ghana’s matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but failed to score as the team exited the tournament at the group stage.
Williams said Ghana had given him much more than football, allowing him to reconnect with his roots and experience the pride of representing his parents’ country.
He added that he would continue supporting Ghanaian football and the Black Stars.
At club level, Williams has spent his professional career with Athletic Bilbao, where he established himself as a key player in La Liga. In 2019, he signed a nine-year contract with the Spanish club, running until 2028, with a reported €135 million release clause.
