A Paraguayan senator, Celeste Amarilla, has demanded a public apology from France captain Kylian Mbappé and warned that she could pursue legal action against him following their heated exchange after the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between France and Paraguay.
In an open letter released on Tuesday, Amarilla said her disagreement was with Mbappé personally and not with France, a country she described as one she has long admired.
The dispute began after France eliminated Paraguay from the World Cup on penalties. Following the match, Mbappé and Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill were involved in a tense confrontation, with reports indicating that Mbappé ignored Gill's attempt to shake hands before the goalkeeper threw the ball toward the French forward.
Amarilla later posted controversial remarks on social media referring to Mbappé's African heritage, comments that drew widespread criticism and were condemned as racist. She subsequently deleted the posts, saying they were written "in the heat of the moment" and that she regretted using insulting language.
However, the senator argued that Mbappé's response, in which he reportedly described her as "a despicable woman" unworthy of public office, was unacceptable. She accused the football star of engaging in gender-based and political violence against a woman.
Amarilla called on Mbappé to withdraw his remarks and issue a public apology, warning that failure to do so could result in legal action.
The controversy has attracted international attention, with French President Emmanuel Macron and FIFA President Gianni Infantino publicly condemning Amarilla's earlier comments and expressing support for Mbappé.
